| Oh, God. so it begins. The "V" pilot is on and... |
 |
...the main "Visitor" alien just said they want to introduce Universal Health Care.
So who rewrote this pilot and what flavor of propaganda are we going to have to put up with to enjoy the remake?

What is so acceptable about those poofy haired women (who all played reptiles), is that their characters were such extreme, domineering princesses, that it works. Diana reminds me of a beauty contestant that will stop at nothing to win the contest.

It took place in the relatively near future. KITT, the computer that ran the car in the original series, had been mothballed. Michael was brought out of retirement and teamed with KITT again in a city where all guns had been replaced by stunners that weren't very effective. A shot of a news program had a snippet about President Quayle. The bad guys, defeated at the end, were put into suspended animation (which was implied to have been instituted by liberals and was deemed ineffective punishment), and the technician in charge mentioned something about having to defrost, "Some guy named Manson," implying a lax on crime attitude.
It sucks when they take old shows people are familiar with and inject politics into them.

I think what I was hoping for was better lizard makeup this time around, but I wasn't impressed with the changes in the plot line - and the snarky hope references.
This could be a good remake - but from what I've seen tonight, I don't hold out much *hope*. The original was pure-D camp sci fi. This one already screams melodrama.
Don't want to see a sci-fi soap opera...

The original was, well, original (not in overall plot of an alien invasion but in how it was protrayed, esp. the miniseries format).
This is just rehashing what's already been done. Like Tom Cruise in the War of the Worlds remake. Throwing flashy CGI and fast camera edits does not equal creativity.

I think we're getting more sophisticated about character development as an audience. (I mean, look at Dexter and Nurse Jackie, for instance) The writers of "V" better deliver.

 |
the Visitors have actually been here for decades, starting unnecessary wars, fomenting general global unrest, committing terrorist acts, wrecking economies... in other words, providing the instability necessary for a "savior" (the Visitor version of Reagan) to come riding in out of the darkness, capable of fixing everything if we will only XYZ.
If there's a negative political statement being made here, it's not pointed at us.

But then again, all the Visitors are supposed to be attractive.
And although I love some of our most Liberal congress-critters...

 |
Who also produces this show.
His original idea was what happens when fascists take over the US. Since in the early 80s, not even the Soviets had the overwhelming power to do that, he chose an alien species with a hidden agenda. NBC bought it because it had aliens and they made some money on Buck Rogers a year earlier.

"There also are reports of a "creative" revamp intended to short-circuit those Obama comparisons." According to this review: http://unclebarky.com/reviews_files/930671ca39508beb5cc... So apparently there was some intent to compare the coming of the Visitors with the coming of the Obama administration. Promising Hope and Universal Health Care with the people adoring them as saviors in down-spiraling times. And of course, the Visitors are duplicitous and evil.

It did a great job of reminding me how looooong the primary was. I wish they spent more time on the GE, but I assume the documentary people just didn't get the same level of access once the primaries were over. Watching the campaign works and volunteers break down after the election was called made my cry happy tears all over again.
